Q: We already own a soft carrier or bookbag style carrier. Why do you require only hard carriers?

A: Hard shell carriers are considered safer and more secure for your cats. Mesh style carriers are easily torn by cats, and the zippers are not secure. Sadly, cats can and do escape from these carriers. We want to ensure your cats are safe and do not escape before or after surgery. Hard carriers are also better for recovering cats overnight before surgery.

Q. Why do we have to drop off our cats the night before surgery?

A. Ironbound Cats utilizes partner veterinary clinics that are approximately a one hour drive from Newark. In an effort to arrive to the appointment on time, we must leave with the cats by 7am. Receiving them the night before ensures that we deliver the cats to the vet on time and no one misses their appointment.

Q. My cat is spraying and it’s driving me crazy! Why can’t I get an earlier appointment?

A. Discounted spay neuter appointments are limited in our area. We reserve emergency appointments for pregnant cats, cat at high risk of getting pregnant (e.g. indoor/outdoor), or cats with pyometra. Although a cat spraying is distressing, this is not considered a medical emergency for the cat.

Q. My cat had kittens and I can’t afford to keep them. Can you help?

A. Our organization intakes a limited amount of homeless cats and kittens from Newark that we spay/neuter, and place for adoption. In addition to offering discounted spay appointments for the mom, we accept the surrender of kittens 12 weeks and under, as space allows. We partner with local rescues and no-kill shelters to place these kittens for adoption. Our mission is to break the cycle and make sure all the cats in the household are spayed/neutered. If you wish to keep or rehome the kittens yourself, we offer discounted spay neuter services for the kittens as early as 8 weeks old (or 2lbs.)
